I’m Manuel, and I’ve been drumming since I was a little boy – not because someone encouraged me, but because the rhythm was already inside me. But I also know what it feels like to not be seen, to not be supported in the way I had needed. I didn’t grow up in an environment where musical expression through rhythmical instruments was nurtured or celebrated in a positive way, though I was lucky to have gotten an early musical education on the Accordion. But it was always tied to pressure and expectations.

However I had to carve out that drumming space for myself – often against huge resistance, lots of doubt, and silence.

It took me years to allow myself to fully follow this passion, to take it seriously, and to understand that music isn’t just a “hobby” – it’s a language of the soul. And something that can truly make your living. It’s a way of remembering who we truly are, beneath the roles, the noise, and the stories we’ve been told about what we’re allowed to do or be.

That’s exactly why I do what I do today.

Because I’ve met so many beautiful souls – coaches, healers, therapists, deeply intuitive and sensitive people – who carry this same unfulfilled longing. People who know they have something to express, something that’s waiting to come out – but who were never encouraged by their parents or friends, never given the space or tools to let it unfold.

Maybe no one ever handed them an instrument unconditionally and said:

Here. This is yours. Try it. Play it. It’s safe. No expectations.

Maybe they were told they weren’t “musical enough” or that they had “no talent.” Maybe they just never found the right moment, the right teacher, the right environment.

On Sunday, December 14th, I’m inviting you to join me for a Handpan Crash Course for Beginners in Fajã da Ovelha between Prazeres and Ponta do Pargo on Madeira. It’s a 2 hours group experience on the quiet and calm side of the island. Seats are limited to 5.

You don’t need any prior knowledge, no sheet music, no rhythm training – just the desire to explore. You’ll learn the technical and methodical basics of how to play a handpan, yes – but more than that, you’ll learn how to listen to yourself, how to trust your intuition, and how to let your emotions and inner rhythms guide your hands.

My deeper “why”

For me, this is not just a music class. It’s a space for healing, for empowerment, for remembering who you are. Because I believe that when we start expressing ourselves creatively – especially through something as direct and vibrational as a handpan – we start shifting things on a much deeper level.

We begin to heal old doubts. We reclaim the parts of us that were once silenced or shamed. We open up to beauty, emotion, and connection – not just with sound, but with ourselves and with others.

I’ve seen how people transform when they play their first few notes – their faces soften, their posture shifts, something lights up inside them. That’s why I do this. That’s my real motivation: to give people the experience I wish I had been given as a child – and to be the teacher and motivator I would have needed back then.

My vision

What I’m building here on Madeira is more than just a series of workshops. It’s a growing community of people who connect through music, presence, and authenticity. It’s a space where people from all walks of life – beginners and pros alike – feel invited, seen, and supported in their musical journey.

But most importantly: I want to make the handpan accessible to more people – especially those who didn’t have the chance to discover their musicality as children. Because music doesn’t belong to the talented few. It belongs to all of us. Especially to those who are ready to listen, to feel, and to play from the heart.
